This publication presents the revised Nordic definition on deafblindness, an important tool for understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by people with combined visual and hearing impairments. The publication emphasises the importance of viewing deafblindness as a distinct disability, rather than simply the sum of two separate conditions.
This publication presents the Nordic definition on deafblindness offering in-depth comments, with the aim of contributing to increased awareness, promoting a more inclusive view on deafblindness, and creating a basis for a society where everyone is given the opportunity to participate fully.
The extended commentaries to the definition provide a deeper insight into the complex aspects of deafblindness. These commentaries explain, among other things, how to apply the definition in practice and highlight the various factors that influence a person’s experience of deafblindness, such as the time of onset, the degree of visual and hearing impairment, and any additional disabilities.
The revised definition and the commentaries have been done by The Nordic Leadership Forum on Deafblindness, and there is a plan on revising it every four years.
By offering the definition in six languages (Danish, English, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish), the publication aims to promote a common understanding and approach across the Nordic region.
