Co-creation with older people from migrant backgrounds
Older adults
Older people from migrant backgrounds constitute a growing group in the Nordic region, but remain under-represented in participatory processes, service development and age-friendly policy. At the same time, this group often faces linguistic, cultural and systemic barriers – yet they also bring with them rich care practices, social structures and forms of community that are rarely utilised as resources in Nordic welfare development.
The project aims to shed light on this topic by highlighting good examples and stories, and by building Nordic knowledge and collaboration networks. The project is being carried out by Fabric+, Norway.
The project builds on findings from a project funded by Design and Architecture Norway (DOGA) and the Centre for an Age-Friendly Norway. This project was carried out in early 2026 in Norway (Bodø, Lofoten and Oslo). It examines how older people with a migrant background experience ageing in Norway, and what local authorities and service providers can learn from other cultural understandings of old age, care and community. The work is based on inclusive and culturally adapted participatory methods and establishes a methodological and empirical foundation for the present project.
This project results in a survey of examples of promising practices in co-creation between older people with a migrant background and local authorities and civil society organisations in the Nordic region. On this basis, a number of key considerations and guiding questions are identified for practical work on co-creation.
