Public health

One of the things the Nordic countries have in common is that our societies are based on a strong welfare model. An active welfare policy is pursued in all the Nordic countries, but despite this, there are growing disparities in health among the population. Public health includes all aspects of health: physical, mental and social. We are working to improve the conditions for people to be able to live the healthiest life possible, regardless of age and gender.

Public health work focuses on equal health and increased knowledge of how to combat the most important risk factors for non-communicable diseases, such as alcohol, tobacco and nicotine products, unhealthy eating habits and insufficient physical activity.

The work being undertaken by the Nordic Welfare Centre contributes to Nordic cooperation’s shared vision of the Nordic region being the world’s most sustainable and integrated region by 2030.

Our focus areas

Our work in the area of public health is primarily commissioned by the Nordic Committee of Senior Officials for Health and Social Affairs (EK-S), under the Nordic Council of Ministers for Health and Social Affairs, and is largely guided by what is of interest in the field of health and social affairs in the Nordic countries.

At the Nordic Welfare Centre, we work on projects, release publications, organise events and manage networks.
