Student mobility and disability in the Nordic countries – Torshavn

Students with disabilities in higher education want to study abroad to the same extent as their student colleagues. Nevertheless, the group is under-represented among those who choose to study in another Nordic country. How do we change this?

The political goal for student mobility in Europe is that 20 per cent of all students should take part of their or full time studies in another country. A study commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers shows that very few students with disabilities make use of the possibility of studying abroad.

The study is presented in this seminar and we discuss what is needed for the students to be able to study at a university in another country. The seminar consists of several brief elements about systems and opportunities for foreign exchange studies and how the situation looks, among other things, in Norway, Denmark, Finland and the Faroe Islands.

The event is part of the Nordic Council of Ministers' action plan for disability cooperation 2018-22 and it is implemented by the Nordic welfare center together with the Nordic Network of Disability Coordinators (NNDC). The seminar in Tórshavn is the last of similar seminars that have been conducted in Stockholm, Reykjavik, Odense, Espoo, Mariehamn and before the Torshavn a meeting in Oslo. In Torshavn we discuss what has emerged during the previous meetings and a possible continued cooperation on the theme.
