Course: Co-creating language with children with deafblindness
Disability issues
Imagine trying to communicate but constantly being misunderstood, or having your communication ignored. This is the reality for many children with deafblindness. Communicative expressions can be difficult to read for an untrained eye. This course will give you knowledge and tools to support tactile language development.
There are many ways for communication partners to support and help develop tactile language in dialogue with a child with congenital deafblindness. In this course, we focus especially on language development and children with congenital deafblindness. The parent’s perspective is important and will be represented in the program. A mother will share her experiences and together with her we discuss and learn about the needs parents have when it comes to support in developing communication with their children.
Based on the motto: if you can see it, you can support it, the course gives examples of how professionals and parents can see and recognise the child’s expressions, as well as how to respond to and co-create language together with a child in a tactile modality.
The course will cover themes and issues such as:
* Parents perspective
* Supporting parents
* Language development
* Tactile communication
* Video analysis
Form
The course consists of lectures, group discussions, practical exercises, and video analysis.
Target group
