How do we communicate with someone without using our vision or hearing? There are many ways for communication partners to support and help develop tactile language in a dialogue with a person with congenital deafblindness. This is the third lecture in a series of webinars during this spring. Once a month we present and discuss a chapter in the book If you can see it you can support it.
These five webinars are based on different chapter of our book If you can see it you can support it. They consist of theory, knowledge, tools, practical ideas, and tips on how to support and give the best opportunities for language development in a tactile modality, so that the person with congenital deafblindness is recognised as a human being using language.
When Trine says GRANDMA … What is on her mind?

Young children pass through a stage of language development in which they use unusual words to name objects or concepts. The most frequently observed aspect of this “misuse” in ordinary children is the overextension of a term. An example is using DOG to name not only dogs, but all four-legged furry animals.
Children with difficulties in language development – such as children with dual sensory impairment – can use this strategy for many years. Examples show that they may extend the use of signs or words they know to represent new concepts they do not yet know how to describe. This way of creating a language requires a lot of energy and past experiences to build on.
How can we be a creative and analytic partner when supporting their languaging?
This webinar will discuss and give practical examples relating to this stage of children's language development. It will provide an example of how a concept can be understood and developed over time.
