Despite significant progress, vulnerable groups in the Nordic region continue to face substantial employment barriers. A new report, aligned with the Nordic Council of Ministers’ strategic initiatives, presents 12 evidence-based recommendations to create a more inclusive labour market where no one is left behind. The publication highlights the significant rise in employment rates among non-Western immigrant women in the Nordic countries, particularly after the economic recovery from year 2013.
The Inclusion of Immigrant Women in the Nordic Workforce
While the Nordic countries outperform the rest of the EU countries in labour market participation, gaps still remain. Vulnerable groups encounter diverse challenges that complicate their integration into the workforce. Holistic and individualized approaches, though beneficial, often hinder the scalability of solutions.
This publication highlights the significant rise in employment rates among non-Western immigrant women in the Nordic countries, particularly from year 2013. Despite improvements, migrant women still face considerable challenges compared to native populations and EU-born immigrants:
– Language Proficiency: Limited command of the host country’s language
– Lack of Work Experience: Minimal formal work experience
– Educational Gaps: Unrecognized qualifications
– Care Responsibilities: Predominantly caregiving duties
– Health Issues: Physical and mental health challenges, especially among refugees
This final report, in a series of five, from the The Nordic Council of Ministers identifies key interventions to address these challenges.
