Iceland: Alcohol hospitalisations nearly double in two decades
From 2005 to 2022, 1,779 alcohol-related hospitalisations were recorded at Landspítali (National University Hospital of Iceland). More than 30% of patients were admitted more than once, and around 100 people died during their hospital stay. The authors of a recent study warn that easier access to alcohol may increase the risk of illness and place a greater burden on the healthcare system.

We analyze Finns’ drinking contexts by age and sex: prevalence of drinking occasion types, the role of intoxication in them, and changes since 2008, when alcohol consumption was 37% higher than in 2023.
