Skärgårdslandskap på Åland

The Department of Social Affairs and Environment of the Government of Åland is responsible for coordinating disability policy in Åland.

In 2022, the Government of Åland adopted Accessible Åland (Ett tillgängligt Åland), an action programme for disability policy covering the period 2022–2025. The programme comprises 29 thematic areas and a total of 58 measures linked to specific articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Funktionsrätt Åland is the umbrella organisation representing organisations of persons with disabilities, family organisations, and client and patient associations in Åland.

The Council for Persons with Disabilities in Åland serves as the Government of Åland’s consultative body on disability issues and functions as the coordinating mechanism for the implementation of the CRPD. Åland has a permanent expert representative in Finland’s National Council on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (VANE).

The Non-Discrimination Ombudsman within the Åland Ombudsman Authority is responsible for supervising compliance with non-discrimination legislation.

Åland’s 16 municipalities are responsible for promoting and monitoring the living conditions of persons with disabilities. Through their activities, they are expected to prevent inequalities and remove barriers that limit opportunities for participation and active engagement in society.
