The Nordic countries, Åland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands need better statistical possibilities to follow up the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. There is a need for improved knowledge within the disability area of the Nordic countries, especially in terms of statistics. It would help to better follow developments within the countries and enable better comparisons between them. All the Nordic countries, Åland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In accordance with Article 31 of the Convention, Statistics and data collection , States Parties undertake to collect appropriate information, including statistical and research data, to enable them to formulate and implement policies to give effect to the present Convention. This information may be used to assess the implementation of its obligations under the Convention and to identify and respond to the barriers faced by persons with disabilities in exercising their rights. Article 35,Reports by States Parties, regulate how the States Parties reports on measures taken to give effect to its obligations under the present Convention and on the progress made in that regard.. There is a need to develop and improve this reporting, especially in statistics. The project will take place in 2017-2018 and the results will be presented on the Nordic Council of Ministers and NOSOSKO’s websites.
