The Nordic region should have the best health in the world.

We are strengthening Nordic public health policy and raising awareness of public health in the Nordic region.

The Nordic Welfare Centre works to promote strong Nordic cooperation in the field of public health. The focus is on the governance and management of public health policy, health equity, and modifiable risk factors that contribute to ill health, disease and premature death. These include social vulnerability, alcohol, drugs, tobacco and nicotine products, unhealthy eating habits and insufficient physical activity.

A common feature of the Nordic countries is that their societies are based on a strong welfare model. Determinants of health are influenced by the design of welfare policy, which in turn affects health outcomes among the population. Despite objectives to reduce health inequalities within the population, health continues to be distributed very unevenly, whilst the societal costs associated with ill health are rising.
