The Pediatric Brain based Auditory and Visual Impairment (P-BAVI) checklist can be used as a preliminary step in the evaluation of a brain based visual and auditory impairment (BAVI), as a way of determining if further, more comprehensive assessment is necessary. Currently the P-BAVI should be considered as an observational checklist rather than a diagnostic instrument. Establishing it as a diagnostic instrument would require considerably more systematic work. For instance, the ≥50% cut-off of the P-BAVI is a useful threshold, but at present it is unvalidated and untested and requires further investigation. The reliability, validity, diagnostic accuracy and normative data of the P-BAVI have not yet been established, and these are areas we hope to investigate as the tool develops.
