Interview is used when the person being assessed can themself communicate how vision, hearing and the bodily-tactile sense are used in everyday life. The interview provides a basis for assessing functional sensory use within communication, acquisition of information, and orientation and independent mobility.
Before the interview is carried out, relevant medical and personal information must have been obtained. If medical information alone is sufficient to establish deafblindness, functional assessment is often unnecessary. Interview is used when this does not provide unambiguous answers.
The interview guide is a professional support tool and can be used freely. The assessor selects relevant questions, adapts the order and formulates the questions in a way that is easy for the person being assessed to understand. The interview should be conducted in calm surroundings, with sufficient time, breaks and space for reflection.
